Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, around 9 to 10 hours of driving without stops. It is too far to do comfortably in one day, so most travelers split the journey over at least two days each way, stopping in the Dades Valley. Here are your options and what to see along the way.
Your options compared
| Option | Time | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private tour | 2 days each way, with stops | Seeing the route without any planning | Highest cost, which drops per person in a group |
| Shared group tour | 3 days | Tight budgets | Fixed stops and timings, with many passengers |
| Rental car | 2 days each way | Confident drivers | Mountain bends, and you still need to arrange the camp and camels |
| Public bus | About 12 hours or more | Very low budgets | Long ride with few or no sightseeing stops |
| Flight to Errachidia | Flight, plus about 2 hours by road | Saving time | Limited flights, usually via Casablanca |
The classic route
The road leaves Marrakech on the N9 and climbs to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, the highest main road pass in Morocco. It then drops to Aït Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village seen in many films, and on to Ouarzazate.
From there, the road runs east through Skoura and the Valley of Roses to the Dades Valley, which makes the natural overnight stop. The next day continues to the towering walls of the Todra Gorge and passes through Tinghir, Erfoud and Rissani. Soon after, the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.
How many days do you need?
- 2 days: Possible only with very long drives, and we do not recommend it.
- 3 days: The practical minimum, as on our 3-day Merzouga tour. It includes one night in the desert and a long drive back.
- 4 to 5 days: The most enjoyable option. Our 5-day route adds extra desert time and returns through the Draa Valley.
Do you have to return to Marrakech?
No. Many travelers continue north to Fes, about 470 km from Merzouga, rather than driving back the same way. Our Fes to Marrakech desert tour covers the same road in the other direction, and the 7-day circuit links both cities.
Merzouga or Erg Chegaga?
Merzouga is the easier choice, with tall dunes and a paved road right up to the sand. For a wilder experience, the dunes of Erg Chegaga are reached by 4x4 beyond M'hamid. Our Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chegaga guide compares them in detail.
