Most Morocco desert trips begin in Marrakech because it has the country's best international flight connections and sits right at the foot of the High Atlas. The road to the Sahara climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, passes Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, then follows the Dades and Todra valleys east to the dunes of Merzouga.
Merzouga is about 560 km away, which is too far to enjoy in one day. Plan at least three days for the round trip, or four to five if you prefer shorter driving days. With less time, the Agafay stone desert is only 45 minutes away and works well as a half-day or evening trip.
